SHILLONG: As the demand for a change in guard in UDP is gaining ground with every passing day, the party has decided to leave it to the wisdom of the nomination committee to recommend the leader who will be heading the party’s new body.
Informing this to newsmen after a meeting of the party’s central executive committee here on  Thursday, the party general secretary  Alantry F Dkhar said that  the meeting decided to constituted an organizing committee for the preparation of the upcoming general council meeting of the party  scheduled to be held on February 27.
According to Dkhar,   the nomination committee comprises presidents and secretaries of the district executive committees, leaders from the youth wing, women wing, farmer wing and six prominent members of the party.
The recommendation of the nomination committee will be placed before the general council for its final approval.
“The nomination committee will deliberate to bring about a consensus as to who all should be holding what position at the general council,” he said.
He also said that the general council will be the authority to decide whether to accept or reject the recommendation of the nomination committee.
The term of the present executive committee of the party ends on March 14, 2017. But the party decided to advance the holding of the general council meeting to February 27 keeping in mind 2018 assembly elections.
Several leaders including UDP working presidents Bindo MLanong and Paul Lyngdoh have made their offers to the nomination committee expressing their interest to lead the party.
The UDP general secretary, however, said those who have made the offer also will have to be examined by the committee which will arrive at a consensus decision.

RESIGNATION: One of the founding members  of UDP  Riang Lenon Tariang  on Thursday resigned  from the party.
