Daughter shaves off her head in wait for justice
Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh): A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district has adopted a novel way to draw the attention of the authorities to get justice. According to the reports, the woman shaves off her head every morning and claims that she will not let her hair grow back until the police takes action against the accused in her father’s murder case. “I have sent petitions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Minority Commission seeking justice for my father,” she said, requesting that her name not be mentioned. The incident, according to the reports, took place last month in the Nawabad police circle where the woman runs an institution for deaf and dumb children. The motive behind the murder was, apparently, a property dispute and the daughter has named her neighbours, Virendra Kumar and Rajiv Kumar, in the FIR. “They killed my father and threw his body down from the terrace,” she said in her complaint. The woman also accused the station house officer (SHO) of Nawabad police station, Sanjay Singh, of shielding the accused who have not yet been arrested. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jhansi, Om Prakash Singh, said that he had been apprised of the matter and would personally inquire into the matter. (IANS)
Restaurant to hold fart contest
Ahmedabad: The thought of a ‘fart competition’ might raise a stink, quite literally, but a restaurant in Gujarat’s Surat is going ahead with one on September 22, and 200 people have registered with an aim to come out smelling of roses with trophies in three categories. Organiser Yatin Sangoi said the registrations continue to remain open, and participants can fight for trophies for the “longest”, “loudest” and “most musical” farts. “Each participant will have 60 seconds to showcase their talent before the judges, one of whom will be a doctor. Our quest is to find India’s best ‘fartists’ in these three categories,” he said. “While such events are held in different countries, this is for the first time such a contest is taking place in India. Registrations have come in from places like Kolkata, Delhi and Jaipur,” he claimed. He said that there might be cash prizes along with the three trophies in case they managed to land a sponsor for the event. Sangoi has been joined by his friend Mul Sanghvi to organise the competition. The seriousness with which the duo take the event can be seen from the fact that they have made a Facebook page and are doling out tips to participants on what to eat in order to give it their best shot. Farmer survives crocodile attack
Kendrapara: An alert farmer survived an attack by an estuarine crocodile in a creek in Kendrapara district of Odisha by displaying his presence of mind, a forest official said. Fifty eight-year-old Bhajakrushna Pradhan was fishing in a creek near Jalakana village in Mahakalpada area on Sunday when the eight-feet-long reptile pounced on him, the official said. Pradhan, who sustained wounds on his right arm, was quick to react. He picked up a bamboo pole and hit the reptile on one of its eyes, he said. The injured crocodile released Pradhan and retreated into the water body. The farmer, who received minor injury, described the experience as a “providential escape” from death. It is risky to net fish in water bodies in protected forest areas as they are ideal habitats for crocodiles, said Mahakalpada forest range officer, Bijoy Kumar Parida. The forest department has initiated a series of measures to save humans and domesticated animals from preying crocodiles, he said. A warning has been issued to people to avoid these troubled water zones, they said. (PTI)
Ex-AP Speaker commits suicide
Hyderabad: Former Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao has committed suicide at his residence here on Monday, police said. He was 72. The senior Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader was found lying unconscious at his posh Banjara Hills residence at around 11 a.m. by family members. His daughter with the help of driver and security guard shifted him to Basvatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The police has registered a case of death under suspicious circumstances and launched investigations. Deputy Commissioner of Police A.R. Srinivas said the cause of death would be known after the autopsy report. The family members told the police that he was under mental stress. Rao’s body has been shifted to the government-run Osmania General Hospital for autopsy. Opposition TDP blamed the YSR Congress Party government for Rao’s death. (IANS)
Cops held for liquor smuggling
Chandauli (UP): Even as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is trying hard to refurbish the image of UP police, police personnel are happily crossing over to the other side of law. Last week, three police personnel were among five persons arrested for their alleged role in liquor smuggling. Chandauli Superintendent of Police Hemant Kutiyal said the police had received information that a consignment of IMFL (India-made foreign liquor) was being taken to Bihar by car through the Audhyogic Nagar area. Inspector, Mughalsarai, Shivanand Misra reached there and searched the car. As many as 566 bottles of liquor were recovered from the car. Even as the search was on, one of the smugglers, Deepak, received a call on his mobile. Deepak asked his caller to help him. Within no time, two constables, Vaibhav Yadav and Sonu Yadav, from Ramnagar police station, reached the spot and pressured the police to release the car and the smugglers in police custody. Kutiyal said that both the constables and the two smugglers – Deepak and Sandip Singh, residents of Haryana – have been arrested. (IANS)
Honour killing: Dalit burnt alive
Hardoi (UP): A 20-year-old Dalit man was allegedly burnt alive over his relationship with a woman from another caste, a killing that his relatives said also led to his mother’s death. According to the police, the suspected case of honour killing occurred at Bhadesa area of Hardoi district on Saturday. Abhishek alias Monu was beaten up, kept hostage in a house and set ablaze, Superintendent of Police Alok Priyadarshi said. Locals who rushed to the spot on hearing his cries and took him to a local hospital. He was referred to a Lucknow hospital but succumbed to injuries on the way on Sunday, the SP said. A relative said Monu’s mother died of shock after hearing the news. According to the SP, locals said Monu was in a relationship with a girl and had gone to meet her when the incident took place. Monu was returning after arranging Rs 25,000 for the treatment of his ailing mother, Ram Beti (60), his uncle Raju said. An FIR has been filed against five people, including two family members and two neighbours of the girl, the SP said, adding that an investigation is on. (PTI)
