Arunachal: Ex-banker held for swindling Rs 1 cr from branch
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Police has arrested a former bank official for allegedly swindling more than Rs 1 crore from the account of the branch in the state capital where he was employed. Luhit Parajuli, a former deputy manager of the branch, was nabbed from Guwahati in Assam on Wednesday five months after a manhunt was launched for him, Capital Superintendent of Police Tumme Amo said. During the period, he had changed his location five times and kept his mobile phones switched off, he said. Parajuli had resigned from the job soon after allegedly committing the crime, the SP said. The manhunt was launched in June after the bank authorities had lodged a complaint at Itanagar police station accusing Parajuli of embezzling Rs 1 crore from the bank’s account and transferring it to different accounts, Amo said. However, due to prompt efforts of the bank manager, Rs 75 lakh was retrieved but the remaining amount could not be traced, he said. “As per norms, the staff of the branch pooled in Rs 25 lakh to the bank’s account,” the SP said. Parajuli, who hails from Biswanath district of Assam, will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Yupia, near here on Thursday during which his police remand will be sought, Amo added. 1 arrested in Trans-Arunachal Highway land scam
Itanagar: The Special Investigation Cell (SIC) of Arunachal Pradesh Police, probing the multi-crore Trans-Arunachal Highway (TAH) land compensation scam, has arrested a former bank manager in Lower Subansiri district for allegedly siphoning off government funds, police said. The SIC team arrested the former bank manager Tage Tania from Jorhat in Assam on Tuesday, SIC SP M Harsha Vardhan said. Tania is alleged to have acted in conspiracy with some government officials to aid in siphoning off government money to have been given as compensation for land acquisition, the SIC SP said. A local court gave police seven days’ custody of Tania. The TAH is an ambitious two-lane highway project covering 1,703 km from Tawang in the north-west to Kanubari in the east. The project, which entails another 848 km as link roads to major towns off the alignment, was conceived in 2008. The All Nyishi Students Union (ANSU), All Lower Subansiri District Students’ Union (ALSDSU) and Land Affected Justice Forum (LAJF) have alleged massive discrepancies in awarding compensation to displaced land owners. AGP floats students’ wing
Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP-led government in Assam, on Thursday launched its students’ wing to mobilise the youth towards regional politics as well as strengthen the party’s organisational base. Students and the youth are aware about political developments and it is necessary to involve them in such matters concerning day to day life, AGP president and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said. “Formation of the students’ wing – Asom Chatra Parishad – was the need of the hour to mobilise the youth of the state towards regional politics. The party workers came up with a unanimous decision to form this outfit. “We want to inspire the youth towards regionalism for the greater interest of the people of the state,” Bora told reporters here. Asked about the need for a new students wing when the All Assam Students’ Union already exists, Bora said, “AASU is a non-political organisation. Therefore, the body has to stay away from politics.” Trinayan Baruah was elected as the president of the Asom Chatra Parishad. (PTI)
