Assamese ethnic Jewellery exhibition  turns crowd puller

GUWAHATI: A large number of people with eye for ethnic jewellery thronged the

second edition of the exhibition on Assamese jewellery organised by the Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Assam here just before Magh Bihu festival.

The stalls were represented by entrepreneurs from districts like Kamrup (Metro), Nagaon, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Nalbari, DimaHasao and Karbi Anglong. The exhibition recorded total sell of Rs 11 lakh  which is a good sign for entrepreneurs  as pointed out by asource in the state’s Industries and Commerce Department.

Visitors from foreign countries too were seen buying the traditional jewellery with great zeal. They appreciated the initiatives taken by the government to promote the local artisans who work at grass root levels.

The exhibition was unique as it exclusively catered to promotion of the jewellery artisans of the state. It may be mentioned that the exhibition was sponsored under Biponi scheme of Industries and Commerce Department, Assam under which entrepreneurs were provided free stall and travel and dearness allowances for the fair days.

Most of the women entrepreneurs who participated in the exhibition had undergone training in jewellery-making in the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati and Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery(IIGJ), Jaipur sponsored by the Women Cell ofUdyogBhawan, Bamunimaidam, Guwahati.
