Editor,

In response to Daisy Kharkongor’s – ILP and development and Justin Sangma’s – ILP the magic bullet? (ST Sep 25, 2012 ) and many others who had expressed their views about the pros and cons of ILP, in the press, or in unreported public meetings, I have this to say. I believe every citizen has individual hopes, wishes and expectations which are treasured by the individual, and may or may not be shared by others. My wishes are that, One, to keep my culture and ethos of living and acting on the belief in (1) the existence of God with or without a particular name, (2) respectfully acknowledging my progenitors – maternal as well as paternal, (3) earning my livelihood honestly – sans corruption which all sane people should abhor. Two, to share the Earth with others of my own kith and kin as equals. All these wishes and aspirations can be achieved only through a strong Possession and Transfer of Land ( Regulation ) Act assisted by other related laws of the land.

On the other hand all these will be just pipe dreams if the present policy of registering names of aliens in the electoral rolls is vigorously and rigorously pursued and executed. So my mantras to achieve my wishes and aspiration are, One, to have enacted a strong Possession and Transfer of Land ( Regulation ) Act and, Two, to review /amend the Representation of People Acts, 1950 and 1951 to introduce a provision to disallow registration of names of aliens in the electoral rolls of any state and to remove any anomalies that may be found in Section 20 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

The government that promises to do these two things among others gets my vote while the government that ignores these suggestions gets my goat, and continued importuning of the authorities to listen and consider these suggestions. Once these two suggestions are seriously considered, no sane person, including me, would put obstacle in the way of development of whatever description one may think of. One may find many obstacles in the way of development, but, ILP is not among them. If the race should eventually be removed from the planet, ILP will not be the cause of it.

Yours, etc.,

 Let Justice Triumph

 Editor,

This letter is in response to the news report, “Champion to contest 2013 polls”, The Shillong Times,dt. September 20, 2012. I am not well versed in the law. Therefore, I do not know whether as per the law of our country, Champion R. Sangma is eligible to contest the upcoming Assembly elections due in 2013 or not. But, I know one thing for sure. If he (Champion) is allowed to contest the upcoming polls and if he wins then I will never ever forgive myself for not challenging his decision to contest the upcoming polls. Champion had such a wonderful opportunity to serve us as our Deputy Superintendent of Police but he let go of that opportunity for reasons best known to him. He could have done many a good work as a DSP. Instead, he co-founded GNLA and a spree of killing/torturing of somebody’s beloved son, father, brother, husband, friend and the like and other unlawful activities had begun under his leadership. And, now he has unfolded his decision/desire to contest the upcoming Assembly elections due in 2013! I am not frightened, shocked nor surprised. But, yes as somebody’s near and dear relation and most importantly as a sensitive human being, I am saddened. I genuinely feel so sorry for all those people whose near and dear ones were killed/tortured under his conscious leadership.

Today, I humbly request the readers of this letter to come out openly without any fears to challenge his decision/desire to contest the upcoming Assembly elections. I also request the concerned authority not to allow him to do what he wants. I take a little pause here by requesting all the political parties, regional and national not to give him the ticket to contest the upcoming Assembly elections. In principle, as a citizen of this great democracy (India), I strongly feel a bad precedence will set in motion if a person like Champion R. Sangma comes to power tomorrow.

Yours etc.,

Prince Thangkhiew
