TURA: The Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU) began its 36-hour hunger strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, here on Thursday at 7am to draw attention to the pressing issues and problems being faced by the students of the college.
Earlier this month, the TGCSU had submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner calling for disbursement of salaries to the lecturers and staff of the Morning Shift of the college within seven days.
The Union informed that the salaries of the part time teaching and non-teaching staff of the morning shift have not been released for the past one and a half year. The staff had been appealing for the release of their salaries for a long time and has even staged several agitations but till date all their appeals have fallen on deaf ears.
The General Secretary of TGCSU, Nikman Marak while speaking to The Shillong Times said that the Union would call a bandh from Monday, 1st October if the authorities fail to meet their demands.
Traders’ stir
Traders of Tura have decided to down the shutters of the entire markets of Tura on Friday opposing the district administration’s decision to give permission to certain groups to organize the trade fair at the Tura Police Parade Ground.
The decision to this effect was at a meeting held among the members of Tura Super Market Traders’ Association (TSMTA), NGOs and traders of different markets of Tura town on Thursday.
TSMTA said that the emergency meeting was called because of the deliberate act of trampling the interest of the local traders by the District Administration and the Tura Municipal Board which had given permission to certain groups to organize the trade fair at the Tura Police Parade Ground.
