From maintaining clean
liness to bringing or
der in one of Meghalaya’s proudest tourist spots, the Golflink, the women securities have done it all, braving every difficulty that might pose a barrier to their dedicated performance.
These women securities of the Unique Ex-servicemen security agency under the directorship of R Marak has been doing their rounds for almost three months now, keeping a close watch on kids playing games on the field, making traffic arrangements in the early morning hours during golf practice besides reminding people of their civic sense and others.
The golf course which falls under the look and care of the Shillong Golf Club has given a contract to this agency with a hope to retain the glory and pride of the tourist hot-spot.
The involvement of this agency has a two-pronged approach to it– employment of local women and maintaining order in the golf course.
“This is an opportunity for us and though it is not an easy job to chase away people for disrupting order in the course and get nasty comments, yet we are happy and feel that we have served our purpose well”, security incharge Simoreen Diengdoh told this scribe in an interaction with them recently.
Diengdoh informed that altogether there is a 12 membered team guarding this big golf course, 6 of them in the morning from 5.30 am to 1pm and another half in the afternoon from 1pm to 5-6pm and after that, the police constables from the Police Training School (PTS) would start their rounds.
“However, the number doubles especially in the weekends when the golf course would be packed with families, friends, and tourists”.
Highlighting the kind of duties they were directed to attend to, Diengdoh said that they mostly had to keep a check on the green field, preventing children from playing football and other games which could damage the grass, persuading the people to keep the field clean and tackle any kind of disruptions.
She also mentioned that recently, they apprehended one person who was creating nuisance and assaulting another person. “We managed to drive him away with the help of the Dorbar Shnong Mawpun and informed the police who later arrested the person”, she added.
When asked about the difficulties encountered in such a profession, the security incharge said that the biggest challenge comes in making people understand their responsibilities and when reminded, they would get nasty comments which are not pleasing to the ears.
“The other side of the Golf field (popularly known as the jungle of love) is also a big challenge for us since people comprising of mostly drunkards and couples would be seated there and they refrain from listening to anything we say”, she said.
Responding to a query on the salary whether it can sustain their livelihood or not, Diengdoh said that as far as salary was concerned, they had no issuees stating that “It is better to have something that you earn than have nothing at all”.
These women securities have received a pat on their back from many on-lookers including cabinet minister AL Hek who is also the local MLA.
Lauding the efforts and hardwork of these women, Hek said “They have done a commendable job and I would say, over the past three month, there have been changes in the manner the golf course is being handled”.
“No matter how challenging and how hard this job might seem, we will always try our best to maintain law and order, cleanliness, and retain the glory of the golf course”, Diengdoh proudly said.
