SHILLONG: The Returning Officer for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections has detailed magistrates in every constituency to ensure that there is no model code of conduct violation and to ensure that the elections are held as per law.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Sunday, Returning Officer Sanjay Goyal informed that additional district magistrates have been deputed to keep tab on all constituencies to ensure that no candidate violates the law while conducting campaigns.

The KHADC and the JHADC elections are scheduled to be held on February 24 and with the date nearing, candidates of various political parties and even independents have intensified their campaigning for the polls.

The Returning Officer has also set up a monitoring cell to register the complaints of those who witness any violation of the model code of conduct.

Stating that the preparations for the election are on track Goyal asserted that every possible step is being taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly.

Reacting to a query on the security arrangements in place, Goyal said that the district police chief has requested for additional forces.

Earlier, the District Administration had issued several orders under Section 144 CrPC in view of the forthcoming district council elections. Hundreds of candidates including political stalwarts have already filed their nominations for the elections and many others are expected to file their papers on Monday, the last date of filing of nominations.
