Army jawan killed in gunfight with ultras in Budgam

Srinagar: An army jawan was killed and three were wounded in a fierce gunbattle with militants in Kashmir’s Budgam district today, police said. Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in village Kausarmullah in Chadoora area following information about the presence of militants there, a police spokesman said. As security forces zeroed in on their target, hiding ultras fired at them triggering a gunfight which was still raging, he said. Four army troopers were wounded in the exchange of fire, an army spokesman said. One of them succumbed to his injuries, he said adding the three others were hospitalised. (PTI)

Tewari registers marriage with mother of his biological son

Lucknow: Veteran Congress leader and former Andhra Pradesh Governor, N D Tewari who tied the knot with the mother of his biological son Rohit Shekhar on May 14 last, got his marriage registered at the registry office here. The 89-year-old leader, who arrived at the registry office supported by his wife Ujjwala Sharma and staff members, completed all formalities related to the marriage to give it a legal status. Tewari had surprised everyone by marrying Sharma at a simple ceremony at his Mall Avenue residence here. Tiwari was Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice and Uttarakhand once. He was the Governor of Andhra Pradesh between 2007 to 2009, when his name figured in a sex scandal and he had to resign. He was also the External Affairs Minister in the Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet in 1980s. Tiwari was earlier involved in a long legal battle to accept Ujjawla Sharma’s son Rohit Shekhar as his biological son. (PTI)

SC grants interim bail to Tejpal to attend mother’s funeral

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim bail for three weeks to senior journalist Tarun Tejpal, who is in jail for over five months for allegedly raping his colleague, to enable him to attend the cremation of his mother and subsequent rituals. A bench of justices B S Chauhan and A K Sikri, granted relief to Tejpal after his advocate Sandeep Kapur informed the court that his mother died yesterday and his cremation is scheduled for this evening. The matter was mentioned in the morning but the bench said that it will pass the order only after going through the case file and said that it will consider in chamber after finishing all cases listed for hearing. The bench then took up the case in chamber at 1.50 pm and passed the order. Briefing about the order Kapur told reporters that Tejpal has been granted interim bail for three weeks. 50-year-old Tejpal has been chargesheeted for allegedly raping, sexually harassing and outraging the modesty of a junior colleague during an event held at a hotel in Goa in November last year. Tejpal was arrested on November 30, 2013. He has been accused of sexually assaulting the victim on November 7 and repeating the offence the next day. He is currently in judicial custody and lodged at Sada sub-jail in Goa’s Vasco town. (PTI)
