SHILLONG: Former Lok Sabha Speaker and NPP supremo Purno A Sangma has welcomed the amendment bill passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly barring MLAs from holding the elected posts of MDCs.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Sangma said if the Bill had not been introduced in the House, the matter would have been decided by the High Court which would have led to disqualification of all the MLAs-cum-MDCs.
He also hinted that despite some legislators quitting their posts as MDCs, the matter would not end there as the High Court will one day     give a ruling resulting in their disqualification as MLAs.
Earlier, Civil Society Women’s Organization president Agnes Kharshiing reiterated that despite the bill being passed, she would still press for disqualification of the MLAs when the pending PIL will again come up for hearing.
