SHILLONG: Following the directive of the Commissioner of Transport, drivers in the city, especially cabbies, have started wearing seatbelts. However, it has been observed that drivers of private vehicles are yet to strictly adhere to the directive.
Earlier, Commissioner of Transport, PW Ingty had asked the District Transport Officer (Enforcement) to conduct surprise checks to ensure that people are donning the seat belts after making wearing seat belts mandatory as per provisions of the Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that it is extremely difficult for the traffic sleuths, busy regulating traffic, to keep a track of every driver not wearing the seat belt.
“We are doing our best to ensure that people adhere to the directive and anyone found flouting the rules are sent to the counseling class being organised by the Shillong Police,” he added.
It may be mentioned that traffic violators in the city have to undergo a two-hour counseling session held twice a month at Sadar Police Station.
