Sainik School students from Mizoram visit state
Shillong: An enthusiastic group of 60 students with 10 teachers from the first batch of the newly established Sainik School of Chhingchhip, Serchhip, Mizoram visited the Assam Rifles headquarters at Laitkor as a part of an educational tour on November 5. The Sainik Schools are a system of schools in the country established and managed by the Sainik Schools Society under Ministry of Defence. During their short stay, they visited the Assam Rifles museum where they learnt about the history of Assam Rifles since its establishment in 1835. They also visited the Mercury Lake and ARPS, Laitkor. They also paid their homage at the War Memorial before an interactive tea session with Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, DGAR. He motivated the children to work hard and choose a career in defence services.
20-day ultimatum to resolve MUDA encroachment issue
SHILLONG: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri u Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH) has served a 20-day deadline to the state government and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to resolve on the alleged encroachment of Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA). It was decided on a meeting on Saturday in which the headmen of various localities from Khasi hills attended the meeting. The Synjuk will send a memorandum to the KHADC on this matter.
Indo-Bangla joint training exercise begins at Umroi
SHILLONG: MILAP, the seventh annual bilateral exercise between the Indo-Bangla army began on Monday at Joint Training Node, Umroi with inauguration of the Joint Training Node by LtGen AS Bedi YSM , VSM General Officer Commanding Gajraj Corps in presence of Maj Gen PS Behl GOC Red Horns Division. A total of 14 officers from Bangladesh Army and 20 officers from the Indian Army are taking part in the event. SAMPRITI, an Indo-Bangla joint training exercise is held alternately in India & Bangladesh every year.
BSF conducts free medical aid and skill development
SHILLONG: 400 people took part in a free medical camp organised by BSF as part of the Border Management Plan, Civic Action Programme at Patharghat and Bakur/Dawki in East Khasi Hills. A team of 11 doctors from BSF and Civil Hospital visited the remote villages where the public has no access to health centers. Free medicines were given out by the doctors. The BSF also started a one month skill development programme with 16 local unemployed villagers under the supervision of troops deployed at the Indo-Bangla border of Patharghat where carpentry courses was held under the aegis of Civic Action Programme. The programme started from November 4 and will end on November 30.
November Revolution celebrated
SHILLONG: A public meeting organised by CRU (Shillong) celebrated the centenary anniversary of the Great November Revolution at BSNL Staff side room on November 4 at 4:30 pm. It was presided by Joydeep Nath. In a press statement, the organisation stated that the November Revolution remains the greatest inspiration to the workers, peasants and common people to create a world devoid of exploitation and establish socialism throughout the world. Establishing a classless society and scientific progressive society is the goal of the workers despite negative propaganda of fundamentalist and capitalist forces and their agents, he added.
Students from NE take up environmental issues
SHILLONG: Students’ conference on environment, forest, climate change and disaster management was held on November 2 and 3 which was inaugurated by PHS Bonney, IFS, Additional Chief Conservator of Forest as the chief guest. He exhorted the students to take sustained initiatives for clean environment, sustainable development and disaster management. Altogether, 13 papers on issues and concerns related to environment, forest, climate change and disaster management were presented by students from the states of Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya.
NE dermatologists conference held at NEIGRIHMS
SHILLONG: The North East branch of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists organised the 28th Annual conference, CUTICON NE States 2017 on October27-28 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong. Governor Ganga Prasad, during the inauguration highlighted the importance of such conference to share experiences by experts to their colleagues. He said that the benefits gained from such conferences should reach to the farthest and poorest of our country. The conference was attended by more than hundred delegates from different states of North East and experts from other parts of India.
Police seize illegal liquor in Nongpoh
Nongpoh: The Ri Bhoi police seized huge quantity of illegal liquor consisting of local and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from a shop owned by Gudhly Sohpdang, a local resident of Nongpohduring a surprise raid conducted at Nongpoh on Monday. Ri Bhoi Police chief, Ramesh Singh said that the surprised raid was conducted to comply with the District Court order on the rising availability of illegal liquor at Nongpoh town. He also informed that the owner of this illegal wine shop will be penalised as per sections of law, adding that as per the District Court order, the seized liquor will be destroyed. The Ri Bhoi Police chief further stated that surprised raid on illegal wine shop will be conducted on a regular basis.
Jirang Congress nominates candidate
SHILLONG: The Jirang Block Congress Committee (JBCC) has recommended the name of Badhok Nongmalieh to the District Congress Committee (DCC) as the party’s candidate from Jirang constituency. In a statement issued here, general secretary of JBCC, GP. Marbaniang said that Nongmalieh has received recommendations from the 60 primary units. Marbaniang added that there were three aspiring candidates from the party but people elected Nongmalieh as the party candidate. Sitting MLA Lamboklang Mylliem of the North East Socialist Democratic Party is representing Jirang constituency.
Connectivity snapped after BSNL tower damage
TURA: BSNL mobile phone connectivity has been disrupted at Rongara in South Garo Hills after lightning damaged a tower over a month ago. This has forced residents here to use SIM cards from Bangladesh. Residents on Monday made urged BSNL officials to repair the tower. “We have already informed the BSNL head office in Tura. But no one has come to repair or replace the damaged receiver. We have children studying in Tura and other places and we are unable to contact them as most of the SIM cards being used here are of the BSNL,” the residents said. People using SIM cards from Bangladesh are spending more on call charges as it is ISD service.
MLA issues legal notice to GSU leader over FB post
TURA: Samuel Sangma, the independent legislator from Baghmara constituency in South Garo Hills, has sent a legal notice to Garo Students Union leader from Mindikgre Grenate M Sangma accusing him of spreading false reports on social media. “The said allegations on Facebook uploaded by you are totally false, fabricated and is posted/uploaded with an intention to malign my client and his family members in general,” the legal notice read. The legislator has demanded unconditional apology and publication of the same in newspapers within three days failing which he would file a defamation case. “I have not given any false allegations against the legislator or his family. I have only filed several RTIs seeking information on the implementation of schemes and government projects in South Garo Hills,” said the GSU leader.
Second round of Intensified Mission Indradhanush
Shillong: The Director of Health Services (MCH&FW) Cum Jt. Mission Director, NHM, Meghalaya informed that the second round of Intensified Mission Indradhanush will commence from November 7 for 7 working days in the State in selected districts namely East Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, North Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and only in the urban areas in West Khasi Hills. To accelerate the immunization coverage, Mission Indradhanush was envisaged and implemented since 2015 to rapidly increase the full immunization coverage to 90 per cent. The National Health Mission and State Health Department, Meghalaya urge all parents of children less than 2 years of age and pregnant women who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated to come forward and avail the services.
New rail booking time
SHILLONG: The Managing Director, Meghalaya Transport Corporation has informed that the working hours of the Shillong Railway Booking Counters have been revised. During the month of March to October, the working hours will be from 8 am to 1:30 pm and from 2pm to 5:30 pm. Recess from 1:30 pm to 2pm. During the month of November to February, the working hours will be from 8 am to 1:30 pm and from 2pm to 4:30 pm. Recess from 1:30 pm to 2 pm. During Sundays and national holidays, the timing will be from 8 am to 2pm. The revised timing will come into effect from November 15.
