SHILLONG: The road sector is the main problem area and is a challenge to good governance in Meghalaya, said chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Paul Lyngdoh on Monday.
Lyngdoh, while apprising the delegation from Puducherry of the various projects in the state and hurdles in implementation, said, “The number of villages that are connected with all-weather roads is limited and (the road sector) is a major challenge to good governance in Meghalaya.”
Paul who is also the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, also told the delegation about the problems that the Shillong Airport project in Umroi faced due to the “lackadaisical attitude of the state government and failure of the various departments in identifying rightful land owners leading to delay and court cases.”
He praised the legislative panel for expediting the abattoir projects in Shillong and Jowai.
“The committee found out that the contractor and the firm executing the project in Jowai were paid over Rs 2 crore in advance in 2012. When we visited the site in March 2014, we discovered that barely Rs 7 lakh was spent on the project,” he said and added that the project is 90 per cent over.
