SHILLONG: The below poverty line (BPL) families of Shillong will have to wait a little bit longer as the dwelling units meant for them at Lumphira, Nongmensong will be inaugurated after the verification of the genuine beneficiaries.
Urban Affairs Minister, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that the department was taking time to inaugurate the remaining dwelling units as it has to verify the antecedents of the beneficiaries besides ensuring that only genuine BPL families are allotted the units there.
“We don’t want to miss out on any genuine BPL families,” he said
According to Lyngdoh, the department wants to inaugurate the remaining dwelling units at the earliest and accordingly, Deputy Commissioner’s Office will be asked to complete the verification of the families at the earliest.
The Government plans to build 600 units, around 100 units, which were inaugurated long time back, had been handed over to beneficiaries.
Initially, Hindustan Prefab Limited (HPL) was assigned the work of implementing the project but later the firm abandoned the project.
After the termination of the contract with the HPL, Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) was given the responsibility of completing the construction of the abandoned housing project under JNNURM in Nongmynsong on its own.
