Five die in Nagaland rain, landslides

Kohima: Two persons drowned and three were feared dead in Tuesnang district on Monday while several roads in Nagaland were cut off due to landslides triggered by incessant rains, officials said.
Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Johnny Ruangmei said five persons were washed away in a river at Hukir village in Tuensang district.
The search and rescue teams has retrieved the body of two from Ahunato in Zunheboto district while search for the other three is on, he said.
In Kohima one person drowned on Sunday in river at Dzucharu, Kohima deputy commissioner, Rajesh Soundarajan said. He said 25 houses have been damaged in heavy rains in the district.
Meanwhile, chief secretary Temjen Toy said several major roads in the state were cut off due to landslides triggered by incessant rain during the past several days.
“Inclement weather condition in the state during past few weeks have been creating havoc and lots of damage of roads, private and government properties are reported from various places,” he said while addressing a press conference here.
The chief secretary said many roads have been damaged in and around the state capital and said that all the technical officers in and around Kohima will be put to assigned duties to clear all the roads.
He appealed to the people not to resort to hoarding as we have adequate stock of all essential commodities.
The Border Roads Organisation said that NH-702 connecting Tuensang-Mon districts have been cut off by a massive landslide which washed away a portion of the road. (PTI)
