GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of a sports stadium at Chamata in Nalbari district on Sunday.
The proposed stadium to be constructed at Chamata Anchalik Sports Association Playground under Dharmapur LAC with a financial outlay of Rs10 crore under Uttaran scheme of the state government, an official press statement issued here said. Along with the foundation stone laying ceremony, Sonowal also inaugurated the final match of 41st Naroram Barman Memorial Football Tournament organised by the Anchalik Sports Association.
Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal underlined the role played by sports in strengthening goodwill, camaraderie, brotherhood and friendship and said that the committed efforts of the state government helped raise people’s interest in sports in the state.
Recalling legendary singer, Bhupen Hazarika’s song, “Ai prithivi ek kridangan, khridai hol santir prangon’’, the chief minister urged the people of the state to take up sports as a way of life to develop positive mindset and better health. Stating that the state government gives special thrust to promoting sports in the state, Sonowal mentioned about several international sports events being held in the state, which significantly helped build a favourable environment for sports in the state.
He urged the sports organisers and associations to make efforts to identify talented sportspersons besides calling upon people to join hands with the government in transforming Guwahati as the sports capital of the country.
Sonowal also lauded the achievement of Hima Das in international track event and said that several other sportspersons of Assam are also making the state proud with their success in different sports events.
Referring to the participation of Mohammadan Sporting Club of West Bengal in the Naroram Barman Memorial Football Tournament, Sonowal hoped that participation of teams from different states in sports championships in Assam would foster brotherhood, friendship and reinforce harmony.
