Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Saturday said there is no urgency to summon a special session of the state assembly to discuss the framework agreement signed with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM) on August 3, 2015.
“The Centre has not informed the state government on the issue. The Centre will take all stakeholders including the Manipur government into confidence when the time comes,” he said. The special session will be summoned only when the details of the agreement are made known, he added.
Referring to the persistent demands of the civil society organisations and the opposition Congress for maintaining the integrity of Manipur, he said that some politicians are spreading lies to the people.
Earlier Biren Singh had said that he will be the first one to resign if Manipur’s integrity is threatened.
Congress leader Gaikhangam said, “It will not create any ripples when the Chief Minister resigns once the framework agreement becomes a statutory body.”
The Chief Minister also said, “The integrity and unity of the state will never be compromised.”
Opposition leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi said, “If the stand of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government is so, then it should publicly announce that the government would shoulder the responsibility in the event of compromising Manipur’s integrity and unity in any manner.”
He said that the Cabinet had fixed the dates of the special session twice, but these were later cancelled.
Opposition Congress has announced that it will urge the Governor to summon a special session of the Assembly. (IANS)
