SHILLONG: What makes Shillong road prone to accidents? Is it lack of civic sense or awareness on traffic rules?
In Shillong, the number of road accidents is on the rise with no concrete solution for making roads safe and secure for both pedestrians and vehicles owners.
Accidents continue to take place and a major reason for such accidents is also lack of civic sense.
On Saturday, a two-wheeler met with an accident near Jowai Sumo stand at Iew Mawlong and the reason was a passenger in a local taxi suddenly opened the door of the cab. Though no formal complaint was filed but the bike rider sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Such incidents are common when vehicle drivers, especially local taxis out of nowhere open their doors, on the main road for passengers to get down from vehicles and many such accidents have taken place.
Similarly, it is also seen that though zebra crossings have been earmarked in different parts of the city many people continue to violate traffic rules and in the process of crossing the road, many times they are hit by vehicles, especially two-wheelers.
While there are hardly any awareness programmes about road safety in the state, such small but major factors of road accidents are never talked about.
It is also seen that though IGP point is a busy junction which remains abuzz with students and office goers and so many important establishments situated near the point like Secretariat, SP office, All Saints’ Hall and even State Central Library, there is no zebra crossing on the road.
