SHILLONG: Entrepreneurship is a lucrative option at a time when government jobs are scarce and local resources like bamboo and jackfruit can be tapped for start-ups, Mawphlang legislator SK Sunn said recently.
Addressing a young audience at the Youth Clubs Development programme organised by Ri-War Mihngi Development Council in Pynursla on Saturday, Sunn gave business suggestions like food processing centres. At the same time, he emphasised better market facilities for selling the processed food.
Sunn encouraged the youths present at the interactive session to tap local resources and build up their entrepreneurial base. “You will not need MLAs or MDCs to recommend names for you to get employment in government sectors,” he added.
Expounding the potential of natural resources like bamboo Sunn said youths can make big in ventures like bamboo flooring, “which is in high demand in the West”.
The MLA also suggested that with jackfruit, another resource found in abundance in the state, one can foray into the cosmetic market. “People in western countries used the seed of the fruit for treating wrinkles. The seed is dipped in milk and after it soaks the milk, it is grounded and applied on the face,” he said at the programme organised in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Trade with Bangladesh will boost local business, Sunn said but with a warning against rampant cattle smuggling. He instead asked youths to exploit the potential of the meat industry in the state.
Some headmen, youth club leaders and women organisation members were among those who attended the programme.
‘Ready to take role as minister’
Sunn said he is ready to take the responsibility of a minister if the opportunity comes which will give him ample scope to serve the public.
Speaking to a group of reporters, Sunn denied on any pre-arrangement made when he joined the UDP about getting a ministerial berth.
“There were no such talks as I joined the party on my own free will,” he said.
Sunn joined UDP as an associate member. UDP is a coalition partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) led by NPP along with People’s Democratic Front (PDF), HSPDP and BJP.
