Wild fire reaches government offices

MAWKYRWAT: The office of the district public relations officer and the PWD quarters at Laitlawsang here were saved from being engulfed by wild fire on Friday.
The incident took place around 11 am.
The fire started from Umdoh and spread up to Laitlawsang and some other parts of Jakrem village.
In several parts, the fire stopped near black-topped roads.
Fire service personnel saved the PWD quarters and the staff at the other office, along with locals, controlled the fire that had reached the office premises.
The Green Volunteers in Mawkyrwat filed an FIR at Mawkyrwat police station against unknown people for burning the land.
Sources said South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo has instructed police to inquire about the cause of the fire and find out who started it.
She said strict action would be taken against those responsible for the fire.
The administration imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the district prohibiting burning of land and forest.
