Man booked for beating up brother to death
Muzaffarnagar (UP): A man was booked for allegedly thrashing his brother who succumbed to injuries three days later in Lilon village in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, police said on Monday. The brother, Amit, died in a hospital Sunday evening, they said. According to Circle Officer Ashok Kumar, Amit was beaten up by his younger brother Rahul on Holi, which was celebrated on March 21. Amit died in the hospital after three days, Kumar said. An FIR under Indian Penal Code Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was registered against the accused on the basis a complaint of Amit’s wife. The case is being probed and efforts are on to nab the accused, police said. (PTI)
Man disowned for joining BJP
Lucknow: A day after his brother-in-law joined the BJP, Samajwadi Party’s Badaun MP Dharmendra Yadav Monday said his name should not be linked with him as he cannot have any relation with any BJP leader. Dharmendra Yadav’s bother-in-law Anujesh Pratap Singh Yadav Joined the BJP on Sunday in Agra. Reacting to the development, Dharmendra Yadav, said, “I have come to know that Anujesh joined the BJP. The media has presented him as my brother-in-law in their reports.” “I want to clarify that I cannot have any relation with any BJP leader, so I do not have any relation with Anujesh. I request the media not to report him as my relative,” the third-term MP said in a statement. (PTI)
Former Dawood aide dies
Mumbai: A former aide of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim died in Jaslok Hospital in south Mumbai, medical authorities said on Monday. Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh, also known as Lambu Shakeel, was suffering from a heart ailment and died late Sunday night, a hospital official said. Details of his ailment and death would be released later in an official statement from the hospital, the official added. Shakeel used to oversee smuggling and hawala operations of the Dawood gang in the 1990s and was a trusted lieutenant of the latter as well another gang operative Chhota Shakeel, a senior Crime Branch official said. He took part in the gang’s gold smuggling activities and was also allegedly involved in transporting weapons and explosives for them, the official said. “Having fled the country, he organised hawala rackets before being held and deported from Dubai in 2003,” the official said. Sheikh was living with his wife and her parents in Bohri Mohalla in south Mumbai. (PTI)
5 dengue cases reported in Delhi
New Delhi: At least five dengue cases, including three in March, have been detected in Delhi so far this year, even though the vector-borne disease is usually reported between July and November, a municipal report released on Monday said. Last year, 2,798 dengue cases and four deaths were recorded by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which tabulates data on vector-borne diseases in the city. According to the report, a case each was reported in January and February and three were detected in March this year by the SDMC. Dengue cases are usually reported between July and November, but the period may stretch to mid-December. While no fresh cases of malaria have been reported, three cases of chikungunya– two in February and one in March have been recorded this year. Doctors have advised people to ensure that there is no breeding of mosquito larvae around them and to wear full-sleeved clothes and use mosquito nets. Water coolers should be dried up when not in use as dengue infection-carrying mosquitoes breed there a lot, a doctor said. (PTI)
Gangsters fire at toll plaza staff
Mumbai: A group of criminals fired four rounds from two pistols at staff manning a toll plaza on the Satara-Pune Highway in the early hours of Monday, police said. The incident happened around 1am at Anewadi toll plaza, when the criminals, travelling in a Maruti Swift car, picked up a quarrel after being asked to pay toll, said an official. Anewadi toll plaza is around 18 kilometres from Satara and over 90 kilometres from Pune. “On being asked to pay the toll, an altercation took place. The driver waited for two more cars, carrying his accomplices, to arrive. Once they came, ten men attacked toll plaza staff and fired four rounds from two pistols. No one sustained bullet injuries,” the official informed. A stone thrown at a toll booth staff, identified as Vishal Raje (30), left him injured, he added. He said CCTV footage of the incident revealed that the criminals were part of the Balu Chorghe gang active in Pune and surrounding areas. (PTI)
Missing boys reunited with families
Srinagar: Three boys, who had gone missing from Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, have been traced and reunited with their families, police said on Monday. A report was lodged at Vilgam police station Sunday stating that three boys from neighbouring village of Dohama in Handwara area of the north Kashmir district were missing, a police spokesman said. He said a case was registered and investigation initiated. During the course of investigation, the spokesman said, it surfaced that the missing trio along with their other friends had left their home for Handwara town. While the other friends came back to their homes, the three did not return, he said. Police initiated searches and traced the three boys in Srinagar, the spokesman said. He said they were safely brought back and have been handed over to their families after proper counselling. (PTI)
