GUWAHATI: Twenty convicted Bangladeshi nationals, including a woman, who had illegally entered India, were deported to the neighbouring country on Saturday, official sources confirmed.
Nineteen of them were lodged at Silchar Central Jail while the woman was kept at the lone detention centre for women in Kokrajhar.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Karimganj superintendent of police, Manabendra Debroy, who was present during the deportation process, said the 20 Bangladeshi nationals were handed over to officials from the neighbouring country through the Sutarkandi border check post on Saturday afternoon.
The handover took place in the presence of district officials, Border Security Force officers, officials from Bangladesh High Commission and Border Guards Bangladesh.
The 20 persons, who had illegally entered the country, were convicted for violation of either the Passports Act or Foreigners Act.
The names of the deported Bangladeshi nationals, who belong to Hindu and Muslim communities, are Shekhar Namasudra, Sujit Chandra Das, Shahati Mia, Saiyad Al Amin, Chand Ali, Rabiul Sardar, Rabindra Chandra Das, Azim Uddin, Alim Uddin, Ishak Ali, Ikbal Hussain, Abdul Gofur, Ahmed Uddin, Samim Ahmed, Porimal Jala Das, Md Abdul Latif, Dijendra Chandra Das, Faruk Mia, Md Ibrahim Ali Kha Talukdar and Aloni Bala Das.
“Conviction after fresh detention normally takes place after six months. The process thereafter has to be followed up with Bangladesh officials and invariably gets delayed. Few of these have been detained back in 2014 while others in the subsequent years,” Debroy said.
Assam shares a 263-km border along Karimganj district with Bangladesh’s Sylhet district.
