Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister’s 100 birth anniversary
TURA: Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister, (L) Captain Williamson Ampang Sangma was fondly remembered by present Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on the occasion of the former’s 100 birth anniversary on Friday.
“Today we remember Captain Williamson Ampang Sangma on his 100th birth anniversary. Captain Williamson was the founder Chief Minister of Meghalaya and the first tribal Governor of the North East, who was a pioneer in leading the Hill State Movement for the attainment of statehood in Meghalaya,” Conrad said in his Facebook account.
Conrad said that Captain Sangma was a leader who advocated for the preservation of the tribal identity of the indigenous ‘hill people’ and fought tirelessly for an autonomous state. He praised Captain Sangma as a legendary leader who paved the way for making Meghalaya the twenty-first state in India.
Meanwhile, a programme to observe the late leader’s 100 birth anniversary was organised by Captain William Secondary School in Tura.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, who was present during the programme, hailed Captain Sangma as a statesman and a great leader who, along with other leaders from the state, fought for preserving the unique identity of the people’s culture and heritage.
He also made an appeal to the youths to follow the values of hard work, equality and preservation of the environment in tribute to the great leader.
