Hailstorm destroys houses, crops in Nongpoh,Tura
Nongpoh/TURA: Heavy rains accompanied with hailstorms hit several villages of Nongpoh area on Thursday evening causing severe damage to crops and vegetation. The roofs of several houses were also damaged in the hailstorm. Amid the COVID-19 lockdown stress, the hailstorm on Friday has washed away the hope of the farmers of the area who are still struggling to make ends meet. A late afternoon hailstorm also lashed Jengjal region of West Garo Hills on Saturday bringing down temperatures across the area.

Spitting in public places prohibited
JOWAI: Following the advisory issued by ICMR which pointed out that spiting in public places could lead to rapid spread of COVID-19, the West Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner has requested the general public to avoid spitting, smoking and chewing of tobacco in public places.

Ban on poisoning of water bodies
NONGPOH: The District Magistrate, Ri Bhoi has prohibited any person or organisation from poisoning rivers, streams or any other water bodies causing widespread destruction of aquatic life within the district. The order will come into force with immediate effect until further order and anyone found violating the order will be punished under the law.

Unclaimed body
NONGPOH: The Superintendent of Police, Ri Bhoi district has informed that on April 5, an unknown male patient (35-40 years old) was found from Nongpoh and admitted at Civil Hospital, Nongpoh for treatment but died on April 10. The body is kept at the morgue for identification. His complexion is swarthy, height 5 ft, oval-shaped face, thin build, black hair with a tattoo of a bat on the right arm. Relatives have been asked to contact the Nongpoh Police Station on the number 8974220862 for identification and to claim the body.

Seng Samla donates money
Nongpoh: The Seng Samla of Pahamlapong and Pahamsohthri villages in Ri Bhoi district has decided to cancel its youth week programme and instead donated the programme fund to underprivileged families of the village to enable them to purchase essential commodities like rice and dal. It may be mentioned that the local legislator of Nongpoh constituency, Mayralborn Syiem had earlier donated three quintals of rice to the village for distribution and with Saturday’s contribution made by the Seng Samla, hundreds of families affected by the COVID-19 lockdown received much-needed help.
