GUWAHATI: In a prompt breakthrough, Assam Police have arrested one person in connection with a junior doctor’s death in Jorhat town of Upper Assam.
Sources inform that Rahul Basumatary, 26, a junior doctor, was found lying in a pool of blood inside his rented accommodation in the Chandan Nagar locality of the town on Friday night.
Jorhat police thereafter launched a search operation and arrested Diganta Tanti, from the Cinnamora area of the town, in less than a day’s time. Even as further investigation is on, the accused has confessed before reporters to have committed the crime.
Hailing from Udalguri district in Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts, Basumatary was reportedly an intern at the Dr J.K Saikia Homeopathy Medical College in Jorhat.
The incident, meanwhile, has sparked protests in his home district, with a rally demanding justice for the deceased doctor, staged under the aegis of All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) at Udalguri on Sunday.
Condemning the incident, ABSU has written a letter to the chief minister demanding constitution of a special investigation team and trying the case in a fast track court.
