Forum calls for CM’s action in Assam-Meghalaya border
SHILLONG: The North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) has urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to take urgent measures for maintenance of peace, security and socio-economic development along the Assam-Meghalaya border. In a letter to Conrad, the NEIPF said that they hear reports of harassments being meted out to people by government officials, police and non-state actors, especially along the border areas between Kamrup district and West Karbi Anglong district in Assam and West Khasi Hills district and West Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya. The organisation said that the boundary dispute betweeen the two states has remained unresolved for the last 50 years and the agreement for status quo has not brought about any improvement.

Plea to grant license for students
SHILLONG: The education cell of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has written to the Registrar of the Meghalaya Nursing Council with a request to grant license for nursing students. The union said that students, who recently passed from their respective colleges/ institutes/ universities from outside the state, were not able to apply for license as they were not able to procure their original marksheet from their respective institutes in view of the travelling restrictions and the closure of the institutions. The KSU has exhorted the Registrar to allow the students, who are seeking license, to apply after they have produced their downloaded marksheet and after it has been duly verified so that their careers would not be at stake.

Doctor’s appointment at PHC sought
TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) from Williamnagar on Wednesday exhorted East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, to look into the immediate appointment of a doctor at Samanda PHC that has been functioning without one since August. In their complaint to the DC, the GSU said, “It has been over a month since the PHC was left without a doctor and this is causing great hardships to the general public residing in the area”. The union also reminded that earlier, the Samanda Regional Unit had also raised the issue before the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) only to fall on deaf ears.

Workshop for teachers, students
SHILLONG: The Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong organised a two-day virtual workshop on effective teaching-learning practices in COVID-19 times. The workshop, which concluded on Wednesday, was attended by Rahul S Chatterjee, who was recently conferred with National Award to Teachers 2020, as the resource person. The workshop, which was organised to observe the Rotary International Literacy month, was attended by teachers of St. Mary’s School and higher secondary teachers of St. Edmunds as the participants. It may be mentioned that students from other states along with the ones from other countries also registered for the workshop.
