Shillong, October 6: Former US President Donald Trump has filed a request to dismiss the poll interference case against him.

As per IANS, his legal team argues that his actions, which aimed to cast doubt on the 2020 election, were part of his presidential responsibilities and should not be subject to criminal prosecution.

Following his loss in the 2020 presidential election, Trump made various allegations of election fraud. However, no substantial evidence supporting widespread fraud altering the election outcome has emerged, according to BBC reports.

In their recent filing on Thursday, Trump’s lawyers contended that his public statements regarding the 2020 election were efforts to “ensure the integrity of federal elections.” They asserted that the acts mentioned in the indictment fell within the President’s official responsibilities and should not serve as the basis for criminal charges against him.

The charges related to the 2020 election were brought in Washington D.C. by special prosecutor Jack Smith, who asserted that Trump’s actions interfered with the usual transition of presidential power after his legal challenges to the election results failed, as reported by the BBC.

The charges against Trump include conspiracy to defraud the US, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an official proceeding, and conspiracy against the rights of citizens. Trump has consistently maintained that the charges against him, as well as other legal cases involving him and his businesses, are politically motivated.
