SHILLONG, Dec 11: The newly-launched Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) demonstration van is looking to ramp up civic engagement and emphasise on the importance of voter turnout with the aim to make voters’ participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections robust.
The initiative also aims to familiarise citizens, especially those that are newly enrolled, with the functioning of EVMs. The demonstration van, equipped with tested machines, will traverse various areas for public viewing and awareness.
The EVM demonstration van was launched by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, RM Kurbah, on Monday.
Speaking at the event, the DC highlighted the significance of citizen involvement in the electoral process, urging the 6 lakh-plus registered voters to actively participate in the elections.
Drawing attention to the successful voter turnout of over 80% during the recent state MLA elections, she appealed to citizens to exercise their democratic rights and make their voices heard in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. She assured the public of the machines’ reliability, emphasising their foolproof nature following extensive testing and scrutiny in the presence of political party representatives and thorough CCTV coverage.
Kurbah clarified that these machines are solely for training and awareness purposes and will not be used in actual elections. Additionally, she welcomed citizens to visit the office for firsthand experience with the machines, aiming to instill confidence and eliminate doubts regarding the election process.
Expressing gratitude to all involved, Kurbah launched Phase 1 of this initiative in East Khasi Hills with plans for subsequent phases.
She encouraged individuals, especially those turning 18, to engage in this empowering opportunity to understand the voting process and reinforce faith in the country’s electoral system.
