NEIGRIHMS faculty issue

Shillong: Concerned over the ongoing development in the institute, KHNAM president Paul Lyngdoh visited NEIGRHIMS along with his party leaders on Thursday.

During the visit, Lyngdoh had a meeting with director Dr ME Yeolekar along with senior doctors to understand the ground realities behind the students’ strike other problems plaguing NEIGRHIMS.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KHNAM president said that the Director has assured him that steps would be taken to implement the suggestions given by him.

“The Director has given an assurance that around 40 new faculty would be joining the institute by the end of July,” Lyngdoh said.

Dr Yeolekar had also informed that the second phase of interviews would be held on the first week of July, he said.

The Director also informed that the interviews of both the first and second phase of interviews would be announced at the same time in the last week of July, he said.

According to Lyngdoh, the NEIGRHIMS authorities also admitted that at present the institute does not have a proper hostel for the MBBS.

The Director however informed that there is a proposal for construction of a separate hostel and a proper infrastructure for the MBBS course inside the campus, the KHNAM president said.

On the setting up of other department like dermatology, psychiatry and dentistry for the MBBS programme, Lyngdoh said that the NEIGHRIMS authorities have also informed that appointment of faculties for the above departments have already been sanctioned as the three departments integral for the conducting the MBBS courses.

About the PG courses in the Institute, he said that the director admitted since the PG courses started three years go there is no one from Meghalaya who has qualified. According to the director, an open entrance examination is conducted for entry into the PG course in NEIGRHIMS, he said, adding that at the moment he is informed that there are a total of ten seats in the PG courses in the four departments.

Meanwhile, Lyngdoh said that the NEIGRHIMS also admitted that people are facing various kinds of problem due to the non-functioning of the CT scan machine.

Later, the KHNAM president had an interaction with the NEIGRHIMS MBBS students where he informed them about the assurance given the director. The MBBS students however told the KHNAM president that they have no faith on the director. This problem has been lingering on for the past three years and the administration has not taken any pro-active steps to resolve this problem, the MBBS students further stated. While assuring the students that his party colleagues would be closely following the developments on the demand of the students, he further assured that if the 40 new faculties do not join the institute within July they would also be joining the movement of the students. Accompanying the KHNAM president were his party MDCs Adelbert Nongrum, James Ban Basaiawmoit and other party leaders.
