Agartala: The Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) has been working on a six-pronged strategy for comprehensive development of the region as suggested in NE Vision document 2020, Tripura Rural Development Minister Jitendra Chowdhury said here on Wednesday.

Referring to the latest report of DoNER, Mr Chowdhury said people empowerment programme had been launched by maximising self-governance and participatory development through grass-roots planning to promote inclusive development.

Besides exploring development opportunities for rural areas through enhancing productivity in agriculture and allied activities, including animal husbandry, horticulture, floriculture, fisheries and generation of livelihood options through rural non-farm employment, the Centre developed sectors for comparative advantage like agro processing and hydro power generation.

He, however, pointed out that for enhancing the skills and competence of the people and building capacities for institutions within the government and outside, NE state governments were asked to create a hospitable investment climate to encourage investment by private sector, particularly for infrastructure.

Chowdhury underlined that the document had emphasised on improvement of standard of living of the people of North-East, structural transformation by effecting significant changes in development strategies to achieve growth rates of Gross State Domestic Product equal to National Averages, harnessing available local resources for development and expansion of trade and commerce in NE.
