LAKHIMPUR (ASSAM): Construction activities of the Lower Subansiri mega dam at Gerukamuch on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have come to a halt following a 10-day blockade launched by several organisations protesting against it.

“Construction work has come to a halt as loaded trucks have been blocked on the highway”, National Hydel Power Corporation (NHPC) General Manager Om Prakash said today. The peasants’ body Krisham Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Asom Jatiyabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Students Union (AASU), Mising students union and 13 other local organisations held a massive protest meeting against the construction of the dam by NHPC on December 16 last and launched a blockade since then. Prakash alleged that several international NGOs, who were against hydel power generation on the plea that it would destroy the environment, were instigating the protesters. Without naming the NGOs, the NHPC official said he was prepared to talk to the protesters to break the impasse. (PTI)
