Tuki appeals to anti-dam agitators

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today appealed to the anti-dam protestors of the Siang belt of the state and the members of Adi Student Unions to come forward with their grievances and discuss the matter with the government to find out an amicable solution.

Addressing on the occasion of 5th Ntishi Day celebration, organised by Nyishi Elite Society (NES) at Indira Gandhi Park here, the Chief Minister said, “Hydro-power could be the major source of income of the state. If we tapp and harness these natural resources generously, the state could earn a huge revenue as royalty which could be used for the all-round development.”

The Nyishis launched movement in 1978 for change of alien nomenclature, ‘Dafla’ to present indigenous nomenclature ‘Nyishi’ which was finally achieved by a constitutional amendment in 2008. Since then Nyishis had been celebrating April 19 as Nyishi Day.

The anti-dam agitators had resorted violent agitation against the holding of public hearings scheduled to be held from April 17 last at different parts of East, West and Upper Siang districts of the state, which had forced the district administration to cancel the hearings against the construction of 2700 MW Lower Siang Hydro Electric Project.

He requested the anti-dam agitators not to be misled by the outside people, it will be very harmful considering the development of the state.

He appealed to the protestors to come forward to the table to discuss it with the government because direct discussion could solve any type of problems.

On law and order situation, he said after taking over charges, his government’s most priority agenda was to maintain the law and order situation firmly for peaceful coexistence and for safety and security of the people.

Considering present situation, he said at present the state was passing through peaceful atmosphere. He urged the people not to mix-up any kind of incident as the law and order problem.

The crime rate in the state during last four-five months had deteriorated as compared to previous five years records.

On the attack on a newspaper office here recently by some unknown persons, the Chief Minister assured the gathering that the culprits who were involved in the crime will be booked and punished according as per law. (UNI)
