Shillong: A ten-year-old boy was washed away by the strong current of the Umkhrah River on Saturday afternoon after he accidentally fell into the river while watching the strong current of the river following heavy rain in the city.

The boy was identified as Juristar Sawkmie, son of (L) Tason L Mawnai of Mawlai Nonglum. He was wearing a light blue woolen sweater with grey long pant and a red t-shirt and a red slipper, family members informed.

Police informed that despite search conducted by the police and local residents of Mawlai Nonglum there were no sign of the body. According to the police, the young boy along with one of his friends was standing on a newly-constructed cemented wall used as a barrier near the Umkhrah River when he suddenly slipped and fell into the river below.

Police said, “We are not sure about the cause of the accident. We think that the boy might have had a headache while watching the strong current of the river and fell into the river.”

However, police informed that the search would continue even as they requested the public to join in the search.
