SAF preparations on track

 Shillong: The State is all set to host the region’s first ever international sporting event, the South Asian Federation (SAF) TT Junior Championships slated to be held in Shillong from June 17 to 19.

According to RG Lyngdoh, chairman of the organising committee and president of the Meghalaya Table Tennis Association (MTTA), the preparations are on track and expressed confidence that venues will be ready well in time. “Everything is in place and we are confident of delivering the goods,” he said while affirming, “We are looking forward to create a benchmark for future events in the region.”

Exuding confidence on the event being a success, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who is also the chief patron of the event, on Thursday assured the organizsers of all possible assistance from the government which is also the principal sponsor of the mega event.

On the same note, organizing secretary, Chiranjib Choudhury said “Though the challenge is quite humungous, we have a good team that is putting an extra effort, leaving no stone unturned, to ensure that such a prestigious event becomes be a runaway success.”

The event which will see participation from seven countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives will be covered extensively by national and international media and the championship will be telecast live on DD Sports.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for June 17 where Meghalaya deputy Chief Minister in charge of Sports, Bindo M Lanong will be the chief guest.
