Shillong: To commemorate its ’65th birthday’, All India Radio (AIR) Shillong, on Sunday launched an interactive session over their frequency modulation channel called “FM Jongphi” which is set to entertain listeners everyday between 9 am to 5 pm.

AIR sources informed that FM Jongphi is available on 103.6 FM and will play Khasi, English and Hindi songs at different timings. At 2 pm everyday the session, “Radio on Demand” will provide people of different age groups a phone in request of their favourite songs apart from a tete-a-tete with the jockeys.

On Sunday listeners were treated to some of the best known Khasi songs like Sier Lapalang and Baieid by Gilbert Nongkynrih followed by the eternal favourite, O Moina sung by Late Skendrowell Syiemlieh.

Listeners of the newly launched programme were particularly delighted by the programme, Radio On Demand co-hosted by Rahul Chatterjee (who was formerly a news reader of AIR) and Basilica Khongwir, a radio hostess.

Most listeners said they like this mix of different genre of music which entertains people of all ages as opposed to other FM channels which cater mostly to the youth and has an overdose of heavy metal variety.

Said an FM radio buff, “ I hope FM Jongphi will really become the listeners’ channel and give the other FM stations some competition. As of now most FM channels are hosted from Guwahati with only one local channel which caters to a youthful audience.”
