 By Our Reporter
SHILLONG: Shillong Lajong and Meghalaya Police (MLP) played a 1-1 draw in their opening encounter of this season’s Shillong Premier League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Monday.
The first half saw both sides going on the offensive but neither could to break the deadlock.
Lajong however came very close to opening their account in the 5th minute after being awarded a free kick but for Samuela’s shot which flew inches over the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Redeem Tlang almost gave Lajong the lead but the captain was not lucky enough as his shot too missed target.
MLP however looked threatening on a few occasions today but lacked finishing. Despite creating a good opportunity near the goalmouth in the 28th minute of the game, they were unable to convert.
Lajong had something up their sleeves just before the end of first half with Allen Lyngdoh making a good run on the left and providing a meticulous cross to Redeem Tlang. The latter’s header from inside the box however went straight to the MLP keeper’s hands.
The Reds looked more focused and confident on the pitch after the lemon break apparently helped by the pep talk from their head coach Alison Kharsyntiew. It did not take much time for them to get on the score sheet as Samuel Lalmuanpuia executed a powerful screamer from outside the box in the 46th minute.
The lead helped the Lajong youngsters gain confidence as they started combining well and appeared more fluid in their offensive play.
Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as a mistake in the Lajong defence resulted in an own goal in the 53rd minute. However, that did not stop the Young Reds as they continued to push forward and put pressure on MLP. In the 71st minute, Redeem chipped the ball from close range but was unlucky as it hit the post.
MLP could have upset the defending champions today if they had more composure in front of goal.
Despite numerous opportunities for both sides, the game ended with the scores level at one all.
Shillong Lajong play their next match of the SPL 2017 against Boys Sports on August 17.
