Shillong: The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is planning to set up a solar power plant within its campus during the current 12th Five-Year Plan period to meet the growing power requirement.

Informing this here on Tuesday, NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof AN Rai said the Central University has proposed an investment of Rs 2.5 crore to improve power distribution within its campus apart from venturing into solar energy.

The total cost of the proposed solar power plant would be shared by the institution and the Centre wherein 10 per cent of the cost would be borne by the institution while the remaining 90 per cent would come as a subsidy from the Centre, he said.

The VC’s stress on solar energy comes at a time when the NEHU campus has been in darkness since Sunday afternoon after its 3 MVA transformer went out of order.

Informing that the amount for the project is yet to be sanctioned, Prof Rai said NEHU would also seek feed-back from Mizoram University, which had set up a 750 KW solar power plant in its campus few years ago.

The VC further informed that the university had installed a 15KW solar and wind energy panel in its campus as one of its pilot projects.
