Basketball finals to be held today

SHILLONG: The men’s and women’s basketball semifinals of the Shillong Games 2012 on Friday saw a keen contest between the teams to qualify for the finals.

In the women’s semis, Nongthymmai SC beat Wahingdoh SC 57-34 to earn themselves a place in the championship match. In the other last-four clash, Lawmali SC defeated Mawkhar SC by 54 points to 30.

In the first men’s semifinal, Ryntih SC beat Lummawbah SC 58-47 and booked their place in Saturday’s final.

Rynthih will place Lumdiengjri SC, who overcame Nongrim Hills SC in a thriller. Their match broke the records as three extra times had to be introduced to decide the winner.

At the end of regulation time both teams were locked at 44 points each. The first extra time of five minutes again saw the teams equal, scoring 54 each. In the second extra time again both teams moved to 63 points each. The third extra time saw lady luck smiling on Lumdiengjri as they could score 71 against the 69 scored by Nongrim Hills.

The finals will be held on Sunday, with the women’s at 11:30am and the men’s at 1:00pm.

In addition, the closing ceremony will be held at 12:30pm on the basketball courts at JN Stadium. All finalists of all the disciplines of the Shillong Games should be present at that time.
