Umiam ICAR Research Complex completes 38 years of existence

SHILLONG: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, on Wednesday celebrated its 38th Foundation Day at ICAR Institute, Umiam.

The institute had a humble beginning in 1975 operating from a rented house at Laban (Amrit Bhavan) in Shillong.

Addressing the gathering during the celebrations Wednesday, ICAR Director, SV Ngachan, said, “Though we are deficient in major areas of various crop productions in the region but our strength lies in taking benefits of tribal farmer-led innovative farming technologies.”

According to Ngachan, ICAR needs effective extension mechanism to go further to reach far-flung villages across the region.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Director of Horticulture, Dr D Daniel Ingty, urged the farmers to be more informative for the betterment of their farming.

He further highlighted that ICAR and the line departments are seriously concerned about farmers’ welfare and as a team were ready to help farmers do their best to improve their livelihood.

Dr R Ravindran, Dean, Central Post Graduate Studies (CPGS), Barapani emphasized on awards and the very nature they possess for advancement of that particular technology to which the award is associated.

On the occasion, employees of various categories were honoured. A farmer-scientist interaction session was also organized which explored new possibilities for the tribal farmers so that they could cope with vagaries of climate change in the time to come.

Seeds of high-yielding crop varieties were distributed to the farmers on the occasion.
