Police team was heading to Tura to escort GNLA deserter

TURA: The five police personnel who were killed in the GNLA ambush were deputed to bring back an arrested GNLA deserter for a court appearance in Baghmara, it has been revealed.

Former GNLA cadre Betning T Sangma was lodged in Tura district jail following his arrest by Baghmara police from Karukol Bazaar in South Garo Hills over three months ago.

The accused had been part of the banned organization but later deserted the outfit to float his own dacoit gang with a small assortment of weapons he had stolen from the group.
