SHILLONG: Shillong is set to be bathed in lights ahead of the upcoming Christmas and New Year, thanks to the efforts of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF).

Several parts of Shillong have been illuminated with decorative lights in an attempt to create the right ambience for the festive season and to provide a sense of celebration to the residents of Shillong who have been witness to continuous violence and agitation for the past three-and-half- months.

The decorative lights have already been put up over the thoroughfares in several parts of the city including Khyndailad, Motphran to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, Laitumkhrah upto Madan Iewrynghep at an estimated budget of Rs 20 lakh funded by the MTDF.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Tuesday, MTDF president Larsing M Sawyan said, “We are doing it to provide the right ambience for the festive season of Christmas and New Year for the people.”

It is expected that the installation of decorative lights would be completed by December 20.

Saywan also remarked that the illuminations across the city would provide a nice picture of the beautiful city to the visitors who would come here for holidays during the festivities.

The illumination is catching the eyes of Shillongites who are thronging Khyndailad and other areas of the city to witness the new trend initiated by MTDF for Christmas and New Year.

The MTDF president, however, regretted that due to lack of funds, they had to cut short their plans of illuminating the entire city for the festive season.
