Pressure groups are not NGOs

Editor,

The terms “Pressure Group” and “NGO” are interchangeable in the Meghalaya context. Most people use the term “NGO” to refer to political bodies like KSU, HNYF, FKJGP and others. Pressure groups do not mind this. It suits their purpose to be branded as NGOs. This provides them with a selfless, dedicated-to-society aura which they capitalize upon to the fullest extent. In reality, they are neither selfless nor dedicated to anyone but their own pockets. The consortium of pressure groups is nothing but a Mafia in every sense of the term. They intimidate government officials for lucrative contracts, extort money from businessmen on regular basis, conduct vigilante-style raids (for extortion) on cement companies and coal industries which use migrant labour, and harass/ kill people cold-bloodedly to stir up racial tension. They also maintain close links with underground extremist outfits for mutual benefit. This is old-style Mafia at work, the power of money and the law of the gun. If we, the people continue to treat pressure groups as Gods, we will continue to live like slaves without a voice. These false NGOs are like the Plague that wiped out ancient civilizations. In our case, we have literally invited this plague into our homes. Our state cannot prosper unless pressure groups are outlawed and their leaders arrested. Pressure groups have snatched away our democratic rights and contaminated society with their evil ways. People are powerless and watch silently as their children are corrupted by this same evil. Those who can afford it send their children away to escape their clutches. Call them by whatever name – GSU, KSU, RBYF, HNYF, CSWO, FKJGP or HYC, their goal is one and the same – to get rich by immoral means at any cost. We urgently need a law to tackle this problem. For once, we pray our politicians will do the right thing by introducing such a law in Meghalaya.

Musically obsessed

Editor,

Apropos the letter by Andrei Vlasic Maribor, “Musical Wars,” while welcoming his views expressed in the letter, I wonder what surprises him about my letter, as I never passed judgement on anyone only expressed my views on the basis of the letters and pictures published in your esteemed daily June 19, 2014 (page 10) where Satan worshipers clearly painted on a tomb “Metal 4 Life,” as published by this daily. Also the performance of the track “Pleasure of Molestation” was pointed out by an attendee and a music lover who had to leave the concert because of the disgust and insult towards females. I do not blame the entire death metal society for their involvement in devil worship but as a responsible citizen I feel there should be an awareness about the present trend of devil worship. Mr.Andrei should also refer to ST July 19, 2014( Page 1 .What we should care about is the younger generation and the youths who do not understand the beauty of music be it of whatever genre but the influence that death metal music has on them, which makes them act violently and rebel against everything. If you Mr.Andrei consider the fact that after my time and your time is done we also do have a family who need to live their lives peacefully and especially the female members in our family who I really worry about with the ongoing rapes, molestations, crime against women in our country and no proper strong law to bring about justice to the culprits, then I do have the right to raise my voice.

Indeed I do look at myself in the mirror everyday and I am grateful and thankful for all the blessings I have received in my life. I suggest you do the same too and at the age of 81 I would rather suggest kindly stop being so obsessed about music only and do take time to think about the future of your family and the society as a whole.

Yours etc.,
