SHILLONG: The newly elected members of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) are scheduled to take oath on Monday while the newly formed Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) is set to stake claim to form the Executive Committee (EC) this week.
Newly elected GHPA leader Conrad Sangma on Sunday asserted that the Alliance enjoys the support of 16 MDCs even as some more elected members have sent feelers expressing their desire to join the GHPA.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Sunday, Conrad dismissed reports that some Independent MDCs were apparently unhappy with his election as the leader of the Alliance, saying that he did not have any knowledge of the same.
He informed that the elected GNC and BJP members had mooted the idea of electing him as GHPA leader and that time the Independent MDCs had  expressed happiness at the decision.
Reacting to a query on the formation of the new EC, he said that EC will be formed in phases and first of all the alliance will elect the chairman.
When asked about the issue of defection, Conrad said ‘defection’ and ‘toppling’ was a common thing in Meghalaya but this time the NPP is confident of its team who are committed and determined to work together.
