SHILLONG: Construction of the boundary wall and the road diversion at the Shillong Airport at Umroi will be completed by March.
Informing this over phone on Friday, Sreekumar, GM (Engineering), Airports Authority of India regional office, said all the issues have been resolved and the construction work is progressing smoothly.
Reacting to a query, he said the work for the expansion of the runway would start after the North Eastern Council clears the necessary funds.
He further said that AAI may think of installing the instrument landing system (ILS) at the airport before the construction of the runway even as he added that AAI has already allotted a portion of the land for setting up of a refueling centre at the airport.
According to Sreekumar, bigger players in the aviation sector would not come to Meghalaya until and unless the runway is expanded.
“Few companies operate ATR 72 aircraft that can land at the Shillong Airport,” he said.
Though the airport terminal was inaugurated long time back, the airport at present hosts only a single flight that connects Shillong with Kolkata.
