SHILLONG: In a major blow to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS), the Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided not to recognise various PG degrees awarded by the institute under the affiliation of North Eastern Hill University.
The post-graduate committee of MCI has decided to put various medical degrees conferred by NEIGRIHMS under ‘not to recognise’ list.
In a meeting held recently, questions were raised about the eligibility of professors and staff at the PG departments of the institute. Also, three departments – Anesthesiology, General Surgery and Radio diagnosis – are under scanner for shortcomings.
When contacted, NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Prithwis Bhattacharya said there was a deliberate attempt to malign the institute and “some people are deliberately trying to plant various issues for vested interest”.
On derecognition of degrees under NEIGRIHMS, the director said the institute has got a notice in this regard.
“They have given us a notice over some lacunae and we have to comply with all the issues when they come for the next examination,” he said and added that NEIGRIHMS has already taken necessary measures to address all shortcomings.
The MCI team that visited NEIGRIHMS recently had pointed out that the Anesthesiology department is short of one faculty member but the institute has submitted evidence that all members of the faculty were regular employees, Bhattacharya said.
The MCI team had also said there was no senior resident doctor at the institute but during inspection, NEIGRIHMS submitted necessary evidence about the presence of senior residents, the director clarified.
