MoU for Wahkaji-Mawthabah road project to be cancelled

SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday resolved to cancel the no objection certificate for uranium extraction at Kylleng-Pdengsohiong Mawthabah as well as the MoU signed for the Wahkaji-Mawthabah road project in 2006.
Addressing the House on the last day of the budget session, KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) P.N Syiem said the resolution was taken following opposition from various quarters and health concerns over uranium mining.
The Council also decided to start an independent inquiry into the proposed road project at Wahkaji-Mawthabah that was approved in 2006 under then CEM H.S Shylla.
The MoU for the project was signed between KHADC and the Uranium Corporation of India Limited.
Syiem said, “Any decision related to uranium mining cannot be taken by the Executive Committee without the prior approval of the House.”
The budget session on Tuesday was interrupted several times due to the uproar over uranium mining.
