EKH hamlet the only one selected from State

SHILLONG: Tyrna, a hamlet in East Khasi Hills, has been chosen by the Centre for 360-degree development.
The Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has adopted Tyrna to develop it as a youth model village.
Salam S. Singh, NYKS district youth coordinator, said one village from each of the 623 districts in the country has been identified for social and economic development. Tyrna is the only village selected from Meghalaya.
The task ahead for the youth body is to make the village open defecation free, improve sanitation, focus on education of children, sustainable agriculture and skill development.
Ankit Kumar Singh, Sohra sub-divisional officer (civil), said the Yuva Aadarsh Gram Vikas Karyakara (Youth Model Village and Employment Programme) will be implemented by Tyrna Youth Welfare and Development Society that received the Best District and State Youth Club Award 2014-15. The Society will implement the training programme on apiculture.
“It is an initiative of the State Government so that villages can have a unique leadership role to play. Many projects will be initiated in the village after the declaration,” said Salam Singh, adding, “We will select different villages, which are contributing valuable services to the society, in the years to come,” he added.
Terming the initiative as “historic”, Ankit Kumar Singh said, “Model is a broad word but it should not be restricted to only youth. We should focus on entrepreneurship, Swachh Bharat, skill development and only then we can say we have developed as a whole.”
