SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) has been asked to be more transparent in its recruitment process.
Addressing media persons here on Saturday, the chairman of the Standing Committee of National Conference of State Public Service Commissions (PSCs), Ghanta Chakrapani, called for online examinations so that candidates can calculate their marks.
States are adopting transparent measures to avoid being blamed for corruption and manipulations in recruitment, Chakrapani observed.
“We are encouraging even the Meghalaya Public Service Commission to be more open and transparent and you should even show the marks to candidates,” he added.
A candidate should be selected to various posts, the number of which is limited, on the basis of merit, said the head of the National Conference, a forum under the aegis of the Union Public Service Commission.
The UPSC chairman is the ex-officio chairman of the Conference and the 29 heads of state public service commissions are its members.
The forum held a meeting in Meghalaya for the first time. A Standing Committee consisting of a chairman and eight members is elected every year from among the chairmen of state PSCs, one third of which members will retire every year.
Earlier, speaking at the same programme, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said people’s representatives should dispel the common perception that state PSCs can be influenced by governments and politicians. Sangma hoped that such engagements of the Standing Committee will ensure that PSCs remain transparent. He also stressed on the need to empower jobseekers and proper counselling and coaching.
UPSC chairman David Syiemlieh said Indianisation of services and efficient PSCs free from political interference are expected.
Syiemlieh said the commissions should ensure that recruitment bridges social and economic differences.
Among others present at the meeting were acting Chief Secretary Y. Tsering, Principal Secretary (Personnel and AR) R.V Suchiang and officials and members of MPSC.
