TURA/JOWAI/NONGPOH/NONGSTOIN: The administration in all districts organised various programmes based on the theme ‘Accessible Election’ on the occasion of National Voters’ Day on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering at DC Park in Tura, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh said the day is celebrated every year to facilitate registration of new voters and encourage the youth to be part of the electoral process.
Singh informed that in the last election in 2013, urban areas recorded less voting percentage. He urged all voters to exercise their franchise this time.
The president of All Meghalaya Association for Persons with Disabilities, Darlingtone Sangma, was felicitated as SVEEP Icon.
In Williamnagar, the 8th National Voters’ Day was celebrated at DRDA Hall that was packed with students, young voters, government officials and others took part in the celebrations.
East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Kumar S said every citizen in the country should be involved in the election process.
The district election office organised marathon and essay writing, among other things. EPICs were distributed and millennium and PWD voters were felicitated.
Nine millennium voters and 60 differently-abled persons were felicitated at the DC office in Jowai. In Amlarem, sub divisional officer DM Suja spoke on the necessity to vote.
The day was celebrated at the DC office in Nongstoin and at Dom Mawlum playground in Mairang civil sub-division and voters from all age groups attended the functions.
Besides the usual events, a bike rally was organised that started from Nongkasen village to Umthlong – Nongthlen village covering two Assembly constituencies.
A pledge reading and introduction of a new district icon for PWD ML Iawlar, a member of the Khasi Disability Association were also part of the programme in Nongstoin. K Kharbani, a motor impairment, composed a Phawar on ethical voting that was announced as the theme song.
South Garo Hills DC SN Marak stressed the importance of ethical voting at a programme in Baghamara. Cultural events were organized in the district.
Similar programme was held in Nongpoh where Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare felicitated millennium voters.
National Voters’ Day was celebrated at Saitsohpen in Sohra where the sub-divisional officer informed first-time voters about the particulars of the process.
