Blind educationist reads out candidates’ names

SHILLONG: Darlington Sangma, a visually impaired voter and educationist, on Friday read out details of the contesting candidates written in Braille at an election-related function held in Tura.
Sangma, an MA in English literature, is a teacher at Montfort School for Education, Danakre, Tura.
Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said Sangma, who is completely blind, is a SVEEP icon for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
SVEEP is Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation.
“Sangma proved his intelligence and smartness by quickly reading out
the details regarding the contesting candidates from the Braille paper at the District Auditorium in Tura in the presence of poll officials and volunteers,” Kharkongor said.
Originally from Tikrkilla, Sangma is currently residing at Matchakolgre, Tura.
